TESOL 2009 Convention

Center for Intercultural Development and Education

The English Language (EL) Fellow Program promotes English language learning around the world, and fosters mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries. It places talented and highly qualified U.S. educators with Master’s degrees with a focus in TEFL/TESL or Applied Linguistics in all regions of the world.

The EL Fellow Program promotes English language learning and enhances English teaching capacity abroad. Through U.S. embassy projects, Fellows share their expertise, hone their skills, gain international experience, and learn other cultures. Upon returning to the United States, they share their experiences and acquired knowledge with their communities and professional colleagues.

The EL Fellow Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), Office of English Language Programs, and is administered by the Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED) at Georgetown University, Washington, DC.

Today, the EL Fellow Program is more vital than ever. We are currently accepting applications for the 2009-2010 academic year (although most projects are September 2009 through June 2010, some will begin in early 2010 to end in December 2010).

There’s quite a bit to learn about the EL Fellow Program. We invite you to explore and get to know the goals of the program, its history and projects in depth before you apply.

Updates

Currently accepting applications for AY 2009-2010!

Georgetown University is currently accepting applications for AY 2009-2010 EL Fellow projects. Georgetown will continue considering applications that were submitted before September 30, 2008 for any remaining AY 2008-2009 projects.

The application deadline for priority consideration for AY 2009-2010 is March 31, 2009. These projects will be announced in March 2009.

Candidate Selection Timeline

Interviews (November – May)
Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis as applications are submitted.

Pairing applicants to projects (March – May)
The deadline for priority consideration for the AY 2009-2010 is March 31, 2009.  Only interviewed applicants with complete portfolios, including letters of recommendation will be considered for a fellowship. Former Fellows must have a positive letter of recommendation from either PAS or RELO during his/her fellowship.

It is possible that an applicant will be considered for multiple projects based on his or her skills and experience; however, candidates will only be placed on only one roster at a time.

Selection of Fellows (April – June)
Beginning in March, Georgetown will notify finalist candidates matched to specific U.S. Embassy-sponsored EL Fellow project rosters. Candidates wishing to be placed on the roster, must be willing to accept an offer should the post (U.S. Embassy or Consulate) select him or her as their first choice for the position.  Candidates have the option to decline the offer should s/he be selected and may possibly be placed on another roster depending on remaining available projects and the skills and experience of the applicant. A candidate's being selected for one project does not guarantee selection for other projects.

Posts will determine which candidate would be the best fit from the roster.  Once Georgetown receives the selection, we will notify the selected Fellow.  At which point, the candidate has two business days to decide to accept or decline the offer.

The selection process will continue until all projects are filled. The majority of selections will be made between April and mid-June, though some candidates will be selected in the summer, particularly for those projects starting in the 2010 spring semester.
